DEF Is Required For Diesel Vehicles

DEF is a mixture of a nitrogen-based compound known as "urea" and deionized water. It plays a central role in selective catalytic reduction, the primary means by which diesel engines reduce their nitrous oxide (NOx) emissions. It is also an environmental hazard, contributing to both ozone depletion and climate change.

In addition to reducing NOx pollution, DEF also has been show to be beneficial in reducing the environmental damage associated with gas combustion.

Because of these environmental benefits, the Environmental Protection Agency mandates that all diesel vehicles use DEF. Demand for DEF has thus skyrocketed in the past few years. If your business hasn't started selling it yet, you're missing out on a major source of revenue. Selling DEF in bulk is particularly important if you service large trucks, which consume about ninety percent of all DEF.

Part of the EPA's mandate requires manufacturers to design trucks so that they cannot run without DEF. If a truck runs out of DEF, it is unable to travel at a speed faster than five miles per hour until it refills. This can be a problem for trucks that have to cross vast rural areas. Thus if you have a rural truck stop, it is essential you carry DEF in bulk as well as jugs.

Supplying DEF Means The Upper Hand In Retail Competition

By failing to sell DEF in bulk at the fueling Island, you aren't just missing out on a major source of revenue. You're also giving your competitors an advantage over you. An increasing number of truck stops are carrying DEF at the islands. The substance can be purchased at retailers including Walmart, travel centers, rest stops, and even auto parts stores. If a business has anything to do with trucking, it's likely to carry DEF. Truckers are on tight schedules, and don't want to waste time buying from multiple businesses. If your competitors sell both diesel fuel and DEF on the Island while you only sell the fuel, customers will likely stop visiting your truck stop entirely. Thus by failing to sell DEF, you not only lose potential DEF revenues, but also revenues from all the other products you sell.
